Description
The Small or Weak Ground, Small Period variety. A diagnostic die defect occurs left of the belt buckle just above the 8 in the date. Courteau (1927) described the Habitant series as “one of the most interesting … of the Canadian tokens,” in part because of the obverse figure wearing “the national costume at that time.” Halfpennies and pennies were issued by City Bank, Quebec Bank, Banque du Peuple, and the Bank of Montreal. This MS63 City Bank token is categorized as Brown, but significant natural mint-red colour remains around the devices. Both sides are strongly struck and glossy. The obverse fields are smooth, and only a few small rim marks stand in the way of an even higher grade. In fact, on his collector envelope, Donald Partrick described this token as MS65. It’s not hard to see why. Amazing eye appeal for the grade.
Ex: Robert A. Vlack; C. Margolis (5/25/1990); Donald G. Partrick.
